	Air Filtration Enclosure Fabrication System Technologies: "Smart Dies", Controls, Notching, Piercing, Punching, Bending, Fastening and Material Handling This fabrication and assembly system, utilizing Hess Industries Demand Flow™ technology, seamlessly manufactures a family of 17 furnace air filter housings configurations. The process begins with a pre-painted steel coil and ends every 28 seconds with a finished enclosure. Each of the enclosures can be different in size from the one in front or behind. Utilizing Hess "Smart Die" technology, the system is comprised of multiple in-line metalforming stations that feed and control pre-painted coil stock, notch and pierce varied length of material, cut the material to the appropriate length, bend and fold the sides, feed and fasten (tox) "U" shaped sub-assemblies for a completed part. Now our customers can build air filter housings based on actual customer orders instead of finished goods inventory based on sales forecasts.

Programmable Servo Positioned Punching Station

This metal fabrication station features two independent servo positioned C frame presses. Each press is independently servo positioned in the Y direction to punch or form features along the edges of coil stock being servo fed in the X direction. The combination of fully programmable X-Y positioning as well as the interchangeable turret tooling provides easy-to-adjust flexibility and Demand Flow Manufacturing production capability.

Programmable Pierce and Forming Station

The Programmable Pierce and Forming Station consists of a tandem ram straight side hydraulic press. The press utilizes the two rams to pierce and form a family of features into the electrical enclosure. Both dies used in the tandem press are "Smart Dies", consisting of a number of automatically gagged punches that are activated depending on product recipe.

Programmable Shearing Station

The Programmable Shear is used to shear a finished blank from the coil stock. The shear is also used to shear off the rough leading end of the coil when starting a new coil as well as to cut the trailing end of a coil into manageable scrap pieces. An auxiliary pinch roll coil stock feeder is fixed adjacent to the shear to use when the trailing coil end has left the control of the main coil stock feeder.

Programmable Servo Positioned Wing Bend Station

The Wing Bend Station motion is servo programmable to adjust for variance in over bend requirements due to varying lengths of enclosure or for variations in mechanical properties between coils. If an adjustment is required either at the beginning of a coil change, at the point of product length change, or anywhere in-between, it is made "on-the-fly" by making an adjustment in the following part and then measuring that part for correction verification.

Smart Dies

Hess "Smart Dies" are sheet metal fabrication die sets where individual features are servo controlled to seamlessly activate on command from the system controller. This is accomplished by gagging punches and (or) varying the pitch of the material feed, which can change from part size to the next without stopping the press system or changing the die. Smart Dies have been most commonly used in HVAC, appliance and electrical enclosure sheet metal components.
